Passion for helping parents & kids grow and connect
Hi there! My name is Marilyn Stephens. I attended University of Houston where I earned a Bachelor's of Science Degree in Interdisciplinary Studies (2010) and a Master's Degree in Education - Counseling (2014). I began my career as a public school teacher, but always knew my heart belonged to counseling. Prior to opening Family Harmony Therapy, I've worked in the middle and elementary school setting as a counselor. I have an extensive background in working with families and children, specializing in anxiety, depression, social pressures, peer conflict, low self-esteem, and interpersonal skills building. I have a vested interest in working with parents to become active participants in their child's development and growth. This involves providing therapeutic services to parents, so they can gain a sense of understanding and healing of their own experiences, with the goal being to restore and grow a strong, healthy family unit. Even though we may not always feel like it, parents are strong, and I want parents to feel empowered.

My therapeutic approach is very client centered. I believe everyone's experiences and struggles are unique. Therefore, therapeutic care should be tailored to fit the needs of each individual. Some of my areas of training are in Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Emotion Focused Family Therapy (EFFT), and Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT). Furthermore, I incorporate Christian Counseling in my work. With my training and experience, I am able to integrate various psychological approaches, along with the Christian faith perspective to guide you. No matter where you are on your walk with the Lord, I meet you where you are and where you're comfortable beginning, while also being sensitive to a differing worldview than my own.
As a therapist, but human first, I take a compassionate, non-judgmental, supportive stance when working with my clients. Trust is the most crucial key to a strong client/therapist relationship, and I hold that dearly. I do my absolute best to help all my clients feel safe, valued, and supported.

My faith, family, friends, and work are very important to me. I've been married just over six years. We have been blessed with a beautiful daughter and our wild, fur-child (dog). I enjoy family time, spending time outside, grilling out by the pool, playing at the park, working out, trying new recipes, traveling, watching movies, reading, and drinking all the iced coffee.
